Rare Y Type set to draw the crowds at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show

A gleaming MG Y Type will be displayed in pride of place on the Stewart Miller & Peter James Insurance stand at the show to celebrate 70 years since the rare model was launched.

Visitors will be able to see the fine 1950 YT four seat open tourer on stand 9-180 at the event, from March 31st – April 2nd.

The prized possession of Jerry Birkbeck, the YT is a truly rare breed.  Though original records were destroyed when MG production ceased at Abingdon in 1980, it is believed that just over 900 of its kind were ever made, with only an estimated 235 still surviving world-wide.

Shortly after manufacture, and sporting its original black colour, the YT was exported to New York State, and, two years later, having been sold by its first owner to a dealer and now resplendent in MG Red, it was discovered by Raymond Baldwin.

The YT spent five years as the Baldwin family car, used extensively all-year-round until its frequent use began to take its toll and it was put into storage until 1985, when Raymond’s son Bill took on the task of restoring it.

Fast forward 24 years to 2009, the YT was still in fine working order and had passed onto one extra owner when current owner Jerry acquired it and transported it back to the UK via Southampton, where it remains very much at the heart of his family.

Following on from its showcase appearance at the show, the much-loved YT will be taking to the roads to complete the last leg of an innovative 70th anniversary event, the Round Britain Relay, a collaboration between the MG Car Club Y-Type Register, the MG Octagon Car Club and the MG Owners Club, involving MG owners across the country.

Sponsored by Stewart Miller & Peter James Insurance, the relay will see an array of MGs, including more than 50 Y Types in total, covering an undulating 1,834 miles around the roads of Britain, each vehicle carrying out one of 37 stages.

The event will start from Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex on June 3rd with one MG setting off along the route in a clockwise direction, and one in an anti-clockwise one, each car carrying one half of a specially-crafted, wooden ‘70th anniversary baton’, which will be put back together as one at the finish point, at Kimber House, the home of the MG, in Abingdon, on July 30th.

A voucher for up to £100 worth of insurance will be on offer to the person who captures the best image of a Y Type taking part in the relay courtesy of Stewart Miller & Peter James Insurance visit www.mgccyregister.co.uk to find out more.

Company director, Peter James, said: ““We are very privileged to have Jerry Birkbeck’s beautiful YT on our stand at the Show and are absolutely certain that it will be a real crowd-pleaser, as well as drawing attention to the 70th anniversary of this wonderful breed of MG.”

“MG is a marque that is particularly close to our hearts so we are delighted to be involved in the birthday celebrations.”
