BANGERS & CASH BARN FIND ASTON TO DISPLAY AT PRACTICAL CLASSICS CLASSIC CAR & RESTORATION SHOW
)
An Aston Martin barn find featured in the new series of TV show Bangers & Cash will be showcased in the Footman James Barn Find display at this year’s Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, held 21-23 March at Birmingham’s NEC.
The rare 1960 Aston Martin DB4 ,with just 37,000 miles on the clock, in barn find condition sold for £145,000 much to the shock of the auction house and other bidders.
Bangers & Cash star Derek Matthewson discovered what he describes as a very ‘level’ car despite his first impression of the car and its storage surroundings was ‘disgraceful’.
“The garage it was in, the roof had gone completely,” Derek explains. “It was quite clear that the owner never went in there, blanked the car out of his mind. The Aston was tucked away, with flat tyres that we pumped up, and a tree blocking its exit that we had to cut down.
“The car needs a lot of work; we found parts scattered all over the place. We couldn’t find the prop shaft for the vehicle, but we did find the grille, which is important, along with kicking strips, panels, etc.”
Considered to be one of the most desirable Astons of that era, Derek had estimated a price of £80,000 initially. However, he knew it was something special when he actually saw it in the garage, especially given there is believed to only be 50 DB4s left on the roads.
Derek added: “Some people have been buying DB4s, spending anything from £500,000 to £1million to restore them, even having the Zagato body grafted onto the car, to create a vehicle valued over £2million. So, buying this for £145,000 is actually a good move as it has all the potential.”
New owner Julian Crossley is no stranger to restorations so his plan for the DB4 is to show how much restoration you can do at home, even on an Aston Martin! Using specialists where needed, Julian will be sharing the restoration journey to encourage others into restoring cars. Work will start as soon as the NEC show is over, and you can follow the restoration on Crossley Motorsport’s Instagram channel.
The Bangers & Cash production team plan to film the vehicle at the show and then follow its progress going forward for future episodes as well.
The Aston will be one of approximately 20 vehicles discovered in garages, sheds, gardens and actual barns that will be appearing at the show in this unique display.
Featuring over 160 classic car clubs and more than 1,300 vehicles, this dynamic show brings restoration to life. Watch live demonstrations as experts rebuild engines, replace interiors, refurbish brightwork, and more. Clubs will be on hand to share invaluable expertise with car lovers of all generations.
With the UK’s largest indoor spring autojumble, 250 specialist traders, and a Classic Car Auctions sale featuring around 200 remarkable vehicles, this is a must-visit event for any motoring enthusiast.
