Barrie Powell – 1990 Porsche 944 Turbo
Thanks to its powerful turbocharged engine and superb handling Porsche’s sports coupe is much admired by enthusiasts, and the example we have here is faster than most. It’s also been cherished by its proud owner.
“This was a rolling restoration over thirteen years and my ambition was to end up with a car that just looks perfectly maintained. Most of the work has been done by my father and I, along with help from Porsche professionals where needed.”
It certainly boasts an impressive specification, including the factory-option Koni adjustable dampers, but it’s what’s under the bonnet that makes this particular 944 extra-special. Work on the engine has resulted in 311bhp and 480Nm of torque, enough for 175mph and 0-60mph in less than five seconds.
It’s not just the performance that makes this such a desirable car because it also has a comprehensive history dating back to when it was new. And it’s accompanied by all of the original parts including the tool kit, tyre compressor and adjustment tool for the dampers.
When a car is this good it should come as no surprise that it’s been the subject of numerous magazine articles. It has also been driven by one of the Stigs, been photographed with Mike Brewer and received more than 200,000 views on YouTube.
So it’s something of a star, but Barrie has really made the most of his ownership with tours around France and winning trophies in the Porsche Club Great Britain Speed Championship. It’s safe to say this cracking sports car is being enjoyed to the full.
Going on sale in 1982, the 944 proved hugely popular and by 1986 it was available with a potent turbocharged engine with the Turbo S following two years later. Available in coupe and Cabriolet forms, around 163,000 were made in total.
