Martin Thorpe – 1997 Eunos Roadster
Enthusiasts will need no introduction to the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car, and this example that was imported in 2005 has certainly been cherished by its owner. It’s one we think you’ll like.
“More than twelve years ago I decided to hang up my leathers, sell my motorbike and buy a sports car instead. I’d liked these for a long time, and although this one was basically sound it was in need of a little love.”
Martin spent a few months getting it into shape and back on the road, and it was the beginning of a rolling restoration that has seen much of the car apart at one time or another. That work has included a small rust repair to both sills, a full repaint, a new hood and thorough treatment to keep corrosion at bay.
The interior has also been upgraded with leather seat trim and new carpets and door cards, and the damaged dashboard was replaced. It was finished off with a wood-rimmed steering wheel and a wooden gear knob made by a good friend, so the cosy cabin is a lovely place to be.
Not that the mechanicals have been ignored, with the Eunos getting a replacement gearbox and clutch and a suspension system uprated with parts from the Mk 2 model. An overhauled steering rack and Minilite-style wheels ensured the car was ready to be enjoyed to the full.
Martin and his wife say the car has touched many parts of their lives over the years, including acting as their wedding car and taking the happy couple on their honeymoon to Cornwall. A toy model of it even featured on their wedding cake!
Magazine features and awards followed, and having narrowly avoided having to sell it their much-loved Eunos is not one they will part with anytime soon.
