Steve Cokayne – 2000 Ford Escort 55 Van

These vans were once very popular with owners appreciating the practicality and affordable running costs, but a hard working life saw many disappear. So this superb example is a real treat for fans of classic commercials.

“It had been owned by an elderly gentleman who just used it for commuting rather than work, and he had it for twenty two years” says Steve. The previous careful ownership certainly explains the amazing condition it is in today, making this Ford something of a rare survivor.

Steve purchased the van in November 2022 after reassuring the owner that it would be looked after and only used for classic car events. Impressively, it came with all of the original paperwork and still featured the dealer stickers and number plates, and it also boasts some optional equipment including heated electric mirrors and electric front windows.

It is perhaps no surprise that it’s attracted plenty of interest at shows, picking up some awards along the way. And maintenance has been straightforward, too, with just a full service, new tyres and a replacement section of exhaust. That work aside it is just as it left the factory, and the supplying dealer was certainly very impressed when Steve sent them some pictures.

The proud owner goes on to explain that the Ford Escort van has a special place in his driving career, having been given a Mk IV model as a company vehicle when he was just nineteen. “I thought I was the bees knees driving a brand new van back then!”

It is memories like those that form a real connection with a classic, and thanks to Steve’s enthusiasm we’d say that this immaculate Ford is in very safe hands. We are very pleased to see it at this year’s show.
