Andy Mewis - 1971 Citroen SM
)
This 1971 Citroën SM is a rare and iconic fusion of French engineering and Italian performance. Designed as Citroën’s flagship luxury GT, the SM combined cutting-edge hydropneumatic suspension with a Maserati V6 engine, offering a truly unique driving experience.
This particular SM has had just three owners in the past two decades. Originally owned by an Englishman living in France, it was repatriated to the UK in April 1997 and spent several years navigating the streets of London.
A significant £20,000 restoration was carried out, including a complete engine rebuild, ensuring the car remains in top mechanical condition. In 2019, it was acquired by an 89-year-old retired Methodist preacher, who had spent his career as the head of the UK’s Meteorological Office. As a lifelong admirer of the model, he purchased it as a well-earned retirement gift to himself.
The current owner, Andy Mewis, first encountered the SM in September 2024 and was instantly captivated by its design, engineering, and fascinating history. Having never heard of the SM before, he quickly fell in love with its character and presence.
This car represents an era when Citroën pushed the boundaries of automotive innovation. With its sleek aerodynamic styling, futuristic technology, and Maserati power, the Citroën SM remains one of the most extraordinary grand tourers ever built.
